Abstract

The article examines the experience of last-mile delivery work in Mexico City through the cases of Amazon Flex and Mercado Libre Envíos Extra, as well as their subcontracted arrangements. From a perspective that brings key urban dimensions into labor analysis, it argues that work performed in urban spaces adds an additional layer to labor precariousness. Urban morphology, access frictions, and insecurity turn the city into a material condition that externalizes costs, unpaid time, and risks onto young delivery workers, while algorithmic control individualizes these constraints as “incidents.” In response, a form of youth territorial agency emerges, grounded in spatial knowledge, tactical route reordering, and digital networks of mutual care. These practices mitigate—but do not overturn—the structural asymmetry produced by the organization of platform-mediated work.
