Abstract

We will develop Simon Clarke’s perspective on the State, dealing only with his first stage of research (1974-1994) which we can call theoretical elaboration and criticism. First, we will reconstruct his criticism of Poulantzas. To do so, we will use his criticism of Lévi-Strauss’s structuralism and Althusser’s structuralist Marxism. These criticisms are the basis for his later debates with Poulantzas and the factionalist approaches dependent on the greek-french author. Finally, we will address the criticisms he makes of derivationist perspectives. Lastly, we will show how Clarke understands the State. At this point, we will mention the main points of disagreement.
