Great works allow us to reflect on the subject under study and lead us to read new books that broaden our understanding and deepen our knowledge of a particular topic. They also make us think about the state of our profession and how it has been shaped by open debates. More importantly, great books make us return to the topics and theories studied in the recent past; they force us to take a fresh look at issues we thought we had understood. This is what Carlos Julio Báez Evertsz offers us in his monumental Desigualdad y clases sociales, an interesting and timely comprehensive critique of theories of social class: a book that seeks to identify the subject of social change in our time, one with the potential to replace neoliberal capitalism and that could begin to build participatory socialism or egalitarian democracy.
