Towards a critical perspective on international migration

Abstract

International migration has been a recurring object of study across various academic disciplines, since migratory processes permeate the imaginaries of industrialized countries as well as those considered developing. If people decide to change their place of residence, it is because they respond to diverse needs, ranging from affective and personal decisions to more structural conditions such as climate change, escalating violence and insecurity, and the intensification of globalization processes, among other factors in which the constant has undoubtedly been the search for better life opportunities. Elucidating some characteristics of the migratory phenomenon, this review aims to present the book Migraciones internacionales en el siglo XXI: un análisis desde una perspectiva crítica, coordinated by Ada Celsa Cabrera García, Gustavo Rodríguez Albor and Ibelis Blanco Rangel (2019), examining the link between international cooperation processes and twenty-first-century international migration from a critical perspective. The book sets out to analyze migration policies as they collide with the reality of international mobility, which ends up straining the principles of international cooperation in the face of the migratory processes of the new millennium.
