Coralia Gutiérrez Álvarez’s book belongs to a new historiographical tradition that goes beyond the perspective, prevalent in the 1970s and 1980s, of treating the labor movement as a social movement with political consequences but disconnected from the concrete economic changes taking place in the industrial branch concerned. Its first merit is to draw attention to the connection between the technical transformation of the Mexican textile sector, called “industrialization” for lack of a better term, and the social consequences of these economic changes.
