The young Argentine Gabriela Selser had a brief conversation with her father, Gregorio Selser, a respected historian of the Sandinista movement in Nicaragua. Given her youth, her father’s advice was that she not join the Sandinista struggle. Her answer was immediate: “You did the theory; now let me do the practice.” This book is the result of that practice. Born in Argentina, Gabriela Selser arrived in Nicaragua in 1980 and threw herself fully into the Sandinista cause after ignoring her father’s advice. The young Selser’s journalistic testimony is above all an intimate and personal account of the literacy campaign organized from the outset by the Sandinista Front and directed by the Jesuit Fernando Cardenal.
