Abstract

The main objective of this article is to analyze the ‘statehood’ of the Holy See, by emphasizing the distinction between the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican State. The views of Catholic and non-Catholic authors on the Roman Church-Holy See binomial are the fulcrum for discussing the role assumed by the Holy See since de Letran Treaty signed by Mussolini and Pope Pius XI in 1929. Recent data on the political and economic actions of the Holy See serve as premonitory elements of its performance that the modern Mexican State must consider in order to defend its lay autonomy in such crucial issues as education, women’s right to legal abortion, homosexuality and clerical pedophilia.
