Starting from the apparent anachronism of the proud milpero Don Bartolo, from the evidence of his backwardness and his supposed underdevelopment, Jean Robert traces in this text a path aimed at deconstructing such evidence and the fallacies that constitute it. It follows this path intertwining the historical critique of the key notions through which modernity has tried to colonize otherness, such as productivity, progress, and development, with sharp reflections based on the learning that Don Bartolo’s work has sown in the author. The modern concept of production emerged when it was redefined as the source of value, which generates exchange values that, in turn, are fully expressed in money. Consequently, economics was redefined as the dependence of human existence on abstract value alone. This also implies a new definition of subsistence– detached from any cultural heritage–as the sociobiological survival of the individual producer under conditions of capital accumulation.
