After establishing the distinction between words and terms, the essay tries to clear up the confusion created by the fact that “communality” was born at once as a word and as a term. The second part sets out the limitations and possibilities of the scientific enterprise that has formed around the term, and sketches the hypothesis that the word has a central function to fulfill in building the new world, in particular for recovering the art of communal living.
