Abstract

This essay debunks the conventional idea that Adorno’s negative dialectic is a critical philosophy that has no relation whatsoever with Marx. Contrary to this prejudgment, I argue that the structural analogy between Adorno’s critique of traditional theory and Marx’s critique of political economy can be regarded as the common thread of Negative Dialectics. On the one hand, Adorno’s critique of the traditional understanding of notions is guided by the concept of abstraction or fetishism, similar to Marx’s critique of economic categories. On the other hand, Marx’s concept of natural history is of decisive importance for Adorno’s critique of the orthodox interpretation of historical materialism in Negative Dialectics. Both authors share an intermediate position between idealism and materialism, which also shows that Marx’s theory represents a model for Adorno.
