I must say, first of all, that for a long time I have lived with the deep conviction of our mysterious yet very real relationship with all beings of the cosmos; this relationship appears at every frontier of my religious faith in Jesus and his gospel. As finite beings, every human person turns out to “Be” a “Being for others.” Social action is the everyday revelation of our existence; we live because our Being is acting with others. Without the “other,” human or not—that is, without a companion in existence—we are nothing. Our neighbor is also in many ways our self: we know them and unite with them through social action in order to create history and shape the world in the most acceptable way to live with dignity.
