Antonio Gramsci is an author who generates debate and controversy wherever he is read; it is no accident that he is one of the most important political thinkers of the twentieth century. Despite the passing of the years, the Italian Marxist—whether through his writings or his life in general—always returns like a specter, as Derrida put it in the case of Marx, and haunts the present as if the communist intellectual were part of it and spoke to us from within the struggle that the left is waging today throughout Latin America and in Mexico in particular.
