Abstract

This text aims to show the creative capacity of a group of rural youth from Tlaxcala, who through the production and decoration of jeans manage to influence social taste and the creation of consumers and aesthetics. Through an ethnographic treatment supported in the anthropology of youth and in the perspective of the new ruralities, it is argued that this youth group is the producer of a political economy of taste: it enables the supply of merchandise for the satisfaction of preferences and choices through of the production; recovers the dynamics of fashion and trending styles of transnational jeans brands and companies to emulate them totally or partially in order to ensure competition with other producers. They are rural youth who, in the midst of the dynamics of constraint, flexibility and risk, produced by neoliberal capitalism, are creative, innovative and have a tacit and hyper-specialized knowledge that allows them to propose their own aesthetics in the textile market. Therefore, it is considered that rural spaces and young people are enclaves of fashion, of the creation of tastes and, therefore, of the generation of consumption niches. It also allows us to rethink how work can become an aggregative way to experience youth, be together and identify. The position of this ethnographic work is the visibility of rural youth as nodal subjects with the ability to contribute with their work, consumption and creativity to the mobilization and enrichment of symbolic forms of an economic, political, social and aesthetic nature in a global-local dynamic.
