The complexity of Medellín on the horizon of modernity (1930-1950): Tensions, imaginaries and conflicts. A reading of the city in the discourse of Juan José Hoyos Naranjo

Abstract

It is considered to address the analysis of the chronicle The Last Death of Guayaquil (1984) of the journalist, researcher and writer Juan José Hoyos Naranjo, to relieve the proposal of temporal cut and make a critical reading of it from the perspective of complex thought, paying attention 387LA COMPLEJIDADDE MEDELLÍN EN EL HORIZONTEDE LA MODERNIDAD... to the route traced by the author with whom this study deals and the resonances of that path in a historical context. Said analysis will be developed around three axes: first, the representation of the city of Medellín as a central urban space, within the framework of the peasant exodus process that Colombia and the Department of Antioquia went through between 1930 and 1950. Second, the way in which This genre has been approached in Latin American literary and journalistic studies, which makes it possible to identify, in Hoyos’s speech, formal procedures of the transitional moment of the early twentieth century (read 1930). Finally, the considerations that unveil the epochal literary establishment –Juan José Hoyos seen as a writer of narrative journalism whose work focuses on the investigation of the city of Medellín from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century– and the location of the intellectual project and Hoyos’s Scripture in xxi Century Colombian Journalism.
