The following article presents a critical reading of Postone’s interpretation of Marx’s critique of political economy as an attempt to “work out” a critical theory of “the core of capitalism” which “could, serve as the starting point for a critical theory of capitalism.” While recognizing the relevance of this reinterpretation of Marx’s critique, it points out a series of gaps that did not allow him to fully postulate a critical theory of capitalism. To address this, it concludes by proposing to complement Postone’s critique by drawing on a number of other thinkers linked to the tradition of Marxian critique as a critical social theory in order to develop a new reading of the critical theory of society.
