The following article develops an overview of Moishe Postone’s fundamental reinterpretation of Marx’s critique in his work Time, Labor and Social Domination. The author places Postone’s work in the tradition of Critical Theory, especially through his understanding of Marx’s critique as an immanent critique of capitalist society. The article delves into the elements of Postone’s critique of traditional Marxism and then unfolds his critical proposal regarding the relationship between abstract labor, fetishistic character, and abstract and historical time. The author concludes by pointing out the need to make this relationship more complex, especially because of the lack of clarity regarding the explanatory purpose of the distinction between abstract and historical time.
