Abstract

In this article I intend to reconstruct the relation between material production and ideas of the future announced in Moishe Postone’s immanent critique of capital. The author is not only a theorist of the value form or the capitalist social form. On the contrary, as shown in the concept of substantive totality, Postone accounts for the becoming-object (machine, artifact, etc.) of capital as a reified social subject. This material objectification of capital is related to the dialectical contradiction between emancipatory possibilities and oppressive forms in capitalist modernity. This contradiction theoretically enables an immanent critique of the modern form of production, avoiding both the straightforward rejection of technology as a whole and its unilateral endorsement. The concept of the social individual, developed from Marx’s Grundrisse, offers some key insights for understanding the link between emancipatory alternatives and technical materiality in Postone.
