The article presents a comparison between two discourses of labor careers and the social representations of those careers. The purpose of the comparison was to identify the nature of the labor niches in which the informants were involved and the nature of the cognitive constructions they had. The first informant was a Quiché woman, dedicated to commerce and to teach in the city of Quetzaltenango, the second most important city in Guatemala. The second informant was a ladino man, involved in agricultural activities of subsistence and also a day laborer that lived in Camotán, rural area in the southeast of Guatemala. The results show us a clear difference of production systems and the ways in which each system becomes a factor in the 134 construction of expectations. The dynamics or the static in labor careers keep a direct influence in the representations of individuals.
