Abstract

The spatiality of urban conflicts is both imagined and real. This paper explores the ways imagined spatialities of emancipation affect urban struggles. Four types of such spatialities are distinguished: the liberated stronghold, the free accessed space, the dispersed spaces of otherness, the threshold as in-between space. The December 2008 Athens youth uprising gives evidence of an emerging geographical imaginary focused on the potentially liberating experience of inhabited urban thresholds. In this prospect, the “right to the city” and the demand for “spatial justice” become propelling forces for the production of a “city of thresholds”, a city in which different urban cultures are mutually recognized and can communicate by creating emancipating collective experiences.
