Introduction to issue 19 of Bajo el Volcán, devoted to the work of Guatemalan historian Severo Martínez Peláez. In the face of the epistemological shifts of recent decades, which propose alternative historiographies to the totalizing character of Western thought, the issue revisits the legacy of La patria del criollo and Motines de indios to think about colonial identity, violence, Indigenous rebellion and class struggle in Guatemala. It also includes a chronicle of the revolt in Athens and three critical readings of Raúl Zibechi’s Brasil Potencia.
