Abstract

Around the world, universities and other institutions of higher education are undergoing structural changes guided by the principles of the entrepreneurial university. In Germany, rankings and comparative tables of departments are the main instruments of this academic capitalism, which steers academic life towards quantitative indicators of success and intensifies workloads. In response, the authors set out the reasons for boycotting academic rankings.
