One of the most complicated tasks facing a sociologist or historian is precisely to delimit a human social process in time. The mere attempt to establish when a living and conflictual process has ended or begun carries the serious danger of reducing it to a historical watershed. The question in the title of Figueroa’s recent book raises issues of great importance for reflecting on present-day Latin America: are we on the threshold of a new form of protest and social critique? If the social mobilizations in Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela have constituted anti-neoliberal struggles, what is being built in their respective contexts? Figueroa offers an analysis of the political, economic and social circumstances of struggles in countries that have had the Cold War as their backdrop.
