Abstract

This article examines two intimately related aspects in the process of social differentiation in the production of coffee in the centre of Veracruz: the superexploitation and discrimination of agricultural labourers by organised producers. Contrary to liberal and communitarian arguments, it poses the insoluble dilemma of political Jacobinism of losing the principle or the colony within neo-liberalism.
