As I begin writing these lines, the media report that the presidential ticket of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) in Bolivia, made up of Evo Morales and Álvaro García Linera, has won the presidential elections, perhaps by an absolute majority. This electoral victory and the expected inauguration of the coca growers’ leader as President of Bolivia continue a long process of social struggles whose latest cycle began in April 2000 with the Water War and whose last major episode was the fall of President Carlos Mesa in 2005.
