To understand the complexity of contemporary subjectivities, in particular the cultural and symbolic process of Zapatismo in Chiapas, the article proposes a “return” through history, a reading “against the grain” of the symbolism of the past. It seeks to bring into focus the materialist contours of symbolic and representative history in the present, since the time of the past is renewed in the vitality of traditions and memory that give meaning to the future.
