The present article starts from the failure of the peace negotiations between the FARC and the previous government of Pastrana and suggests a complex approach to the violence in Colombia which pays special attention to the geographical setting and historical background of the conflict. The present violence should be seen in the contest of an agrarian problem that has never been resolved and [articular process of state construction, accentuated in the short and medium term by a profund crisis of political representation and the penetration of drug-dealing into Colombian society.
