This article suggests that the specific form that capitalist social relations assume at the global level. This implies that a possible international economy structurally bound up with the possibility of a system of sovereign states. The enigmatic character of sovereignty expresses, therefore a contradictory dynamic within modern society: a dynamic which necessarily creates this form while at the same time it systematically undermines it.
