Some aspects of the new legislation on science and technology indicate that the type of research to be promoted in Mexico, even in public universities, will be research oriented towards improving productivity and competitiveness in the global market and closely subordinated to private interests. The author calls researchers’ attention to the new situation created by this law and to the problem it poses for research that universities, especially public ones, have traditionally felt obliged to pursue: research which, without immediate technical or economic utility, addresses the truly important aspects of human existence and fosters social, cultural and spiritual development.
